How To Make Orange Kombucha

How To Make Orange Kombucha

Kombucha is a fermented tea drink with a history dating back centuries that has gained significant popularity in recent years due to its potential health benefits. It’s made by fermenting sweetened tea with a symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast (SCOBY).

And to make orange kombucha, we’re going to use fresh squeezed 100% orange juice!

Where to get a scoby? You can get one from a friend (many people give away scobies on Facebook marketplace or craigslist), buy one on amazon, or make one.

What is starter tea? Starter tea is tea from a previous batch of kombucha, you can get some from a friend or use store-bought kombucha.

FYI: Your jars can explode if the pressure becomes too high! Always leave more space at the top of the bottles than you think.

Total Time 7 days
Servings 1 Gallon

Equipment

  • Glass gallon jar or Glass Drink Dispenser
  • Kitchen funnels
  • Glass jars with flip tops
  • Large tea ball
  • Tea filters
  • Bar keepers towels

Ingredients

  • 1 scoby you can get one from a friend, buy one here or make Scoby here
  • 1 cup starter tea old kombucha you can get some from a friend, or use store-bought kombucha
  • 7 black tea bags or green tea bags or 2 tbsp loose-leaf black or loose-leaf green tea in a tea ball or tea filter
  • 1 cup granulated white sugar
  • freshly squeezed 100% juice orange juice

Instructions

  • Bring ½ gallon of water to a boil and add to a jar that's at least 1 gallon. Stir in the sugar to dissolve it completely.
  • Add the tea bags and allow it to steep for 15 minutes.
  • Add another roughly ½ gallon of cold water, (make sure you leave enough space from the top for the starter tea and the scoby) and allow it all to steep until the water has cooled completely.
  • Once the tea is completely cooled, remove the tea bags.
  • Stir in the starter tea and add your scoby. Cover the top of the jar with a clean dish towel and secure with an elastic.
  • Place in a dark, room temperature area (mine is in a back closet, but you can also just place in a room, or cupboard) and allow the tea to ferment for 7-12 days, or until you can’t taste the sugar anymore. Check the kombucha every so often to make sure it's fermenting properly and there aren't any fruit flies or mold.
  • You can begin tasting the Kombucha after 7 days. I use a straw, or you can pour out a tiny bit into a glass. When tastes tart and a bit sweet you're good to bottle!
  • To bottle, prepare more tea by following steps 1-3. This is going to be your next batch! Again, make sure it's cooled completely.
  • Clean your hand thoroughly and transfer the scoby and 1 cup of the fermented tea to the jar with the new tea.
  • Depending on the size of your bottles, sterilize 7-10 glass bottles with flip tops. And allow them to cool completely.
  • Add 2 shot glasses full of orange juice to each clean bottle using a funnel, leaving about an inch and a half of room from the top, and seal with the flip top.
  • Store the bottled kombucha in a dark, room temperature area and allow to ferment again for 3-6 days, or until you see a small scoby form on the top, and you reach your desired carbonation. You will get a feel for how carbonated you like your kombucha after a few tries.
  • Place them in the fridge to stop the fermentation process, and drink when chilled!
  • Repeat with your next batch!

Full Course Vegan Christmas Dinner Party

What are you looking forward to the most during the Holidays? I love getting together with my family and friends, playing fun games, and eating an endless amount of good food. As a vegan recipe creator, my mission is to create a safe place with the BEST dinner parties and get-togethers without ever feeling excluded for being YOU! There is so much life to celebrate and food is an essential part of connecting with your loved ones who you haven’t seen for a long-time.

I have compiled a list of stress-free easy holiday recipe ideas that you and your guests will love!

Appetizers

vegan-sausage-rolls

1. Vegan Sausage Rolls

Appetizers should be simple, and savory to kick-start your appetite. Hence it’s name. This bite-size sausage-wrapped pastry is the perfect starter to welcome your guests. Depending on the size of your party, you can make these a day in advance and heat them up in the oven before serving.

The “sausage” in this vegan sausage roll is made from a combination of seitan meat and raw nuts, giving it a fantastic meaty and cheesy taste and texture. Then wrapped in a soft puffed pastry adding even more dimension to the texture and overall mouth-feel.

VEGAN spanakopita recipe

2. Vegan Spanakopita

I absolutely love spanakopita! They are so easy to make and so addicting! From the crispy textures of the phyllo sheets to the creamy, warm, and cheesy stuffing, life is so much better with finger-licking good appetizers. Using vegan substitutes, you don’t have to feel left out at your big fat Greek Holiday party! Inspired by Mama Voula’s vegan recipes, your guests are guaranteed to ask for more.

spicy-vegan-artichoke-dip

3. Spicy Vegan Artichoke Dip

Artichoke dip is always the life of the party.  Traditionally, this party-favourite is ooey-gooey-cheesy rich, served with flatbread or veggies. This artichoke dip has a sinful, decadent flavor and texture followed by a spicy kick. It is a great base for any other vegan dip creation that’s been lingering in your brain! Try it with spinach, for a more traditional spinach-artichoke dip, or throw some vegan cheese in the mix and bake it for a hot variety.

4. Budget-Friendly Vegan Meatball Glaze Recipe

Meatballs are classic appetizer dishes that you can serve as samplers. There are endless combinations you can pair with these delicious meatballs. The balance of the sweet and juicy meaty texture of this recipe is almost shocking when you share it with your non-vegan friends!

vegan ricotta toast with broccoli and garlic garnish

5. Vegan Ricotta Toast (Broccoli & Garlic)

This vegan ricotta toast is the bread and butter of a great holiday dinner. This simple and delicious starter is super easy to make and great for anyone who needs a dairy-free option due to dietary restrictions.

Main

Smoked Cauliflower Recipe

6. Smoked Cauliflower Recipe

Who said you can’t BBQ in the winter? This is a great recipe for any dinner party and makes a great plant-based “roast” option for the veggies in your family. Plus, since it’s made on a barbecue, so you can walk away while it cooks and focus on preparing other things inside the kitchen. This recipe is unique, and well-balanced. It’s the perfect centerpiece and conversation starter, and pairs perfectly well with other dishes like mashed potatoes and brussels sprouts. However, if you don’t have access to a barbeque, you can also make this in the oven.

7. Vegan Glazed Ham Roast

When you thought your holiday couldn’t get any better, I created the ultimate vegan glazed ham roast so you definitely don’t have to miss out. This sweet, smokey, clove-pinned, pineapple-glazed ham is divine. It’s made from pork-flavored seitan, covered in a sweet sticky glaze, and roasted to perfection using my Napoleon BBQ – You can also do this in the oven!

vegan beef wellington

8. Vegan Beef Wellington

This vegan beef wellington recipe uses 15 ingredients and is super easy to make for any holiday or dinner party. I will show you how to make this easy vegan wellington using an easy meaty filling & puff pastry. The trick is to roll all the meat into a burrito! The bigger the better!

store bought vegan roast

9. Easy Vegan Roast

This is a secret recipe for making the easiest vegan roast. There is no shame in cooking smart because this $5.00 store-bought vegan roast (like Tofurkey) is all you need to save time and make any meal taste great! However, if you do have some extra time, you can also check out my homemade vegan holiday roast recipe if you want to make vegan roast made from scratch!

10. Vegan Tourtiere Recipe

Tourtière is a Canadian meal from Quebec, traditionally eaten on Christmas Eve or New Year’s Eve. This meat pie is filled with minced vegan meat and potatoes baked in a pie crust for that crispy and savory texture we all love in a “meat” pie. This dish will definitely get you in the mood for the Holidays.

lazy lasagna

11. Lazy Vegan Butternut Squash Lasagna Recipe

You can make this awesome butternut squash in under an hour with minimal effort. All you need is a blender, a pot, and your favorite baking pan to make this delicious dish, especially during Christmas preparations! The sweet, creaminess of this dish is guaranteed to be one of your favorite vegan dishes of all time.

vegan shepherd's pie

Saucescranberry-sauce

13. Cranberry Sauce

Cranberry sauce is like the black sheep of the family, often overlooked and not given enough credit. Step away from the canned cranberry sauce. There is no glory in using a can-opener as a prepping tool. Making cranberry sauce from scratch is insanely easy. This basic all-natural homemade cranberry sauce is the perfect topping for Christmas dinner. Just a few quick and simple ingredients.

Easy Vegan Gravy Recipe | VEGAN Holiday menu | Christmas Recipes | Cooking with Wine | The Edgy Veg

14. Mushroom Gravy

Gravy has its place all year round, but it really shines during the holidays. Gravy is also a great way to mask any cooking flops, so if something doesn’t turn out quite right, it’s all gravy baby! I put that stuff on everything.

15. Hot Honey Recipe

Drizzle on that kick of sweet and spicy you love on your favorite dishes! Honey is one of the controversial topics in veganism. This is because honey is made by bees and bees eat it to survive the winter season, and eating honey will eliminate the food supplies for the bees. As a result, we coined the term “beegans” for vegans who still eat honey in their diets as an exception. However, if you would like to eliminate honey in your diet and are curious about the “no-bee alternative”, this recipe is a great way to start. Don’t forget to try this on pizza, vegan fried chicken, or even as salad dressings.

16. Vegan Cheesy Cornbread

Cornbread has been a family tradition for some time. We love a dense, cheesy cornbread that you can dip in any of the saucy meat dishes from your main. Was it really a Christmas party without side dishes to munch on?

17. Vegan Bacon Wrapped Tater Tots

Using my Viral Rice Paper Bacon recipe, we can make the perfect snacks for any occasion, especially during Christmas, this is a great finger food to snack on in between your meals and a great conversational starter with your new and old family members.

18. Vegan Cobb Salad

Gluten-free, dairy-free and soy-free! This cobb salad is the ultimate dish for that family member or friend who is allergic to almost everything. Luckily, most vegan dishes offer a great variety of dishes that is suitable for most dietary restrictions.

Dessert

pumpkin-pie

19. Pumpkin Pie

Without a doubt, pumpkin pie is standard for holiday dinners. This is the easiest vegan pumpkin pie you will ever make! Perfect for a vegan Christmas dinner. This recipe also includes the directions for making a vegan pie crust. Top this pie off with some vegan whipped cream and you will have the vegan pumpkin pie of your dreams.

20. Vegan Cream Cheese Frosting

What is smoother and creamier than cream cheese frosting? Homemade vegan cream cheese of course! The best part about this “lactose-free!” alternative is that it can go on any dessert. This cream cheese frosting is made with tangy and sweet flavors that pair perfectly with my two favorite cake flavors: carrot cake and red velvet.

Vegan Pecan Pie Recipe | Easy Vegan Thanksgiving Recipe

21. Pecan Pie

Let’s face it, the holidays can make us all a little bit nuts, so take the nuts into your own hands and serve them up hot! Turning the traditional pecan pie recipe into a vegan-approved dessert is not just ‘pie in the sky talk here. This delightful, down-to-earth dessert is easily achievable AND it’s heavenly! What makes this recipe different from the traditional pecan pie recipe is the vegan pastry dough base, the brown rice syrup to replace corn syrup, coconut sugar to replace regular refined sugar, and flax meal to substitute for eggs. I also highly recommend the vegan whipped cream to top it off.

22. Vegan Deep Fried Ice Cream Burrito

DId you know that you can enjoy ice cream in the winter? If you deep fry them of course. This burrito-style deep-fried ice cream uses phyllo’s pastry sheets, which are way crispier and lighter than your average ice cream ball! Remember to make extras because your friends will devour them when they see this.

Creamy Pink Lemonade Recipe (Vegan)

Is pink lemonade made with pink lemons? Not necessarily. Although they do exist, we are creating this creamy pink lemonade with a vegan twist. If you need a refreshing and sweet drink to remind you of that perfect warm afternoon in the sun, this recipe is made just for you. This blend of the creamy, sour and sweet recipe uses only 6 ingredients! Pink lemonade is typically made with condensed milk to get that creamy-sweetness, but we will be replacing this with a vegan half & half or cashew cream. The creamy texture is a nolstalgic summertime drink.

Alternative ways to make this recipe:

You can add some of your favourite frozen fruit or substitute the sweeteners with vegan alternatives! Drink this cold drink on a summer afternoon or even on those cold days when you are craving ice-cream!

The secret to the bright pink color in this Pink Lemonade Recipe is frozen raspberries (no, you don’t need to go into every grocery store to find pink lemons– although they do exist). In addition, the cream makes everything taste fluffier and smoother.

This recipe makes one large serving for one or two small ones for two. You might want to share this before you get a brain-freeze.

Vegan Chai Latte Recipe

In North America, you often hear people order a “chai tea latte”, from popular cafes like Starbucks. However, in India, “chai” really means “tea”, they also use less milk to taste more of the spices. This recipe is a simplified and non-traditional version that uses a pre-made chai masala spice mix that you can get at the local Indian/Asian grocery stores. You can also make spices from scratch by grinding the spices together for a more traditional spin.

Are there other ways to make it?

You can substitute the milk to soy or even cashew milk and swap sweeteners for any natural sweeteners (i.e. dates, honey, agave) you have in the kitchen!

This is a simple vegan recipe that I know you and your loved ones will really love!

Chai Latte

This is a great dessert drink to unwind with. On a chilly day, I love to curl up on the couch with a nice hot cuppa and my sleepy dogs. It is my favorite way to treat myself after a long day at work. Since this only takes 5 minutes to make, you can enjoy this drink warm, spiced, creamy beverage any time.

This recipe is so easy to make, and although the traditional version is richer and more flavourful, this simplified chai latte hits the spot. All you need to do is boil water and add spices, then add the tea and milk, finally the sweetener, then pour and enjoy!

How many servings does this make?

This recipe makes 2 servings, but it is easy to double or even triple the recipe if you’re serving more guests.

Can I make it ahead of time?

You can make a batch of chai and keep it in the fridge for either an iced latte for later, or warm on the stove on low heat until warmed and ready to enjoy again.

The best season for picking apples is Fall & Winter! And  I want to share with you my favorite vegan caramel apple smoothie recipe you can enjoy all year round. This drink will satisfy your sweet tooth and is healthy for you! This is a smoothie recipe by my lovely assistant, Molly. If you don’t know, Molly has been working with me since early 2019 and in our recent YouTube video, Molly picked recipes for me for a full day of eating! I was so happy with the recipes she shared that I wanted to feature them here so you can all try them yourselves. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!

Vegan Caramel Apple Smoothie Recipe

Hi guys, it’s me, Molly. I am so excited to share this smoothie recipe with you! I love the caramel flavour of dates and the sweetness of bananas and apples, a dash of cinnamon makes it warming and sweet and hemp hearts add creaminess.

Are there other ways to make it? Add anything you have handy! Flax seeds would be great, peanut butter or a handful of nuts would be perfect in this! You can even swap for chocolate protein powder or leave it out!

This is a simple vegan smoothie recipe that I hope you’ll really love!

You can have this for breakfast or even as a post-workout smoothie, made perfectly for a light, healthy snack. It almost tastes like a blend of caramel apple or apple pie ice cream. This recipe is so easy to make, add everything into a high-speed blender, blend until smooth, pour into a glass, and enjoy

How many servings does this make?

This recipe makes 1 large smoothie or 2 snack-sized ones.

Can I make it ahead of time?

If you have to have a quick morning, measure everything but the milk and banana and add them to the blender or a jar, then in the morning, everything to a blender and give it a quick blend!

Feeling like cranberry mimosa with no additives and vegan-friendly? This Christmas mimosa recipe is the perfect drink for the holidays or any celebration!Cranberry Mimosa

This cranberry cocktail recipe is so quick, you can make 5 cocktails within 5-7 mins. All you need is sugar, water, prosecco or champagne, fresh or frozen cranberries, and fresh rosemary for that gives you that pop of green and red! You can fill your mimosa with as much bubbly as you wish!

I garnished my cranberry mimosa with sprigs of rosemary and two whole cranberries, but it’s optional. You can decorate your cocktail however you want!

Cranberry Mimosa

VEGAN | NUT-FREE | GLUTEN-FREE

To make the cranberry mimosa, you must make the homemade rosemary cranberry simple syrup, which takes about 5 mins. This is something you can do before your party or before guests come over. The longer you allow your simple syrup to steep, the stronger your simple syrup will taste.

In a medium saucepan combine sugar, water, cranberries, and rosemary. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly, until the sugar has dissolved.  Then, remove from the heat, cover and refrigerate for as long as you can. The longer you allow the ingredients to steep, the stronger the simple syrup will taste. If you are making a cranberry mimosa for guests the same day, steep for a few hours if possible. Right when your guests arrive, strain the simple syrup and assemble your cocktail.

Within 2 minutes, add 1.5 oz of your cranberry syrup to each champagne flute or cocktail glass. Place 2 cranberries into the glass and fill each glass with champagne or champagne of choice. Garnish with a sprig of rosemary if you wish.

TIPS FOR MAKING CRANBERRY MIMOSA

  • You can use the cranberry simple syrup with other liquor if you don’t like or don’t have prosecco or champagne. Use the simple syrup recipe as the base and make a cranberry mimosa with triple sec, a cranberry mimosa with vanilla vodka or whatever alcohol you might have that makes sense to add! Options are endless. Just taste test before you go ahead and make 5!
  • You can make a cranberry mimosa pitcher if you’re having many guests over and need a pitcher for guests to pour a tasty festive drink!
  • When making this recipe, I used prosecco but you can use champagne, cava, or even sparkling wine. Just make sure to check if it’s vegan

WHAT KIND OF CHAMPAGNE IS BEST FOR MIMOSAS?

Any true champagne is the best for mimosas; a Brut worked well with my cranberry mimosa. You can also make a mimosa from cava or dry prosecco.

VEGAN CHAMPAGNE OPTIONS:

  • Veuve Clicquot Champagne
  • Perrier-Jouet Champagne
  • Larmandier-Bernier Crament Nature
  • Paul-Etienne Saint Germain Champagne
  • Moet and Chandon Brut Imperial

VEGAN PROSECCO OPTIONS:

  • Bottega Prosecco
  • San Leo Prosecco
  • Princess P. Vegan and Organic Prosecco
  • Giol Prosecco Frizzante

VEGAN CAVA OPTIONS:

  • Codorniu 1872 Cintage Brut Cava
